ESSAY ON SCENE AT A BUS STOP
In a metropolitan city like Delhi buses are an important means of transport. They link one far end of the city with the other. Travelling by buses is cheap and economical for a common man. Unfortunately the bus services have failed to satisfy the requirements of the passengers. It is often said that the bus service in Delhi is the worst and people are right in saying SO.
One morning I was late for my school bus. I had to wait for the DTC bus plying on route number 780. A large crowd waited at the bus stop covering half the road as well. There was no sign of a queue though the sign board clearly displayed the message ‘Please stand in Q, It will only help you’. I enquired from a lady if she had seen any bus with the required number passed by. Her negative answer gave me some hope of reaching school on time.
I looked around and found people engaged in different activities. Some were talking and laughing. A few leaned on the pole of the shed and smoked lazily. Two women were busy with the knitting. Some gentleman like persons were reading the morning’s newspaper. Most probably they were late like me and did not find time to read it at home. A group of Air-
India Staff waited for their staff bus. Some labour-like people waited with their dirty bags as if they were to board a train.
Whatever activity the passengers were engaged in, their eyes constantly turned in the direction the bus was to come from. Though there is a proper time schedule for every bus, they are never on time. One has to wait much beyond the scheduled time and fight one’s way through when the bus finally comes to a halt. This too is a rare privilege.
At last to the relief of the waiting crowd a bus came but stopped much ahead the bus stop. Before people could run and catch it, the conductor whistled. Another bus which was just behind did not stop and sped by. There was confusion as no one could decide which way they should move. Women cursed the authorities with irritated faces. One more bus came but only four or five passengers could get in. Three more managed to board the running bus.
Last in the row was 780 numbered bus. It was full of passengers but I embarked it the very moment it stopped. I was lucky as the rear door came to halt right in front of me. I didn’t even bother to see who joined me but I did receive a hard push from behind. I was relieved to find myself inside the bus. I silently wished good luck to others.
Really, the bus service needs to be improved. Otherwise the scenes at the bus stops will continue to be pitiful. Lot of time is wasted in waiting which, otherwise, can be put to better use.
