In his 2018 Independence Day speech, the Prime Minister announced the Ayushman Bharat – National Health Protection Scheme (AB-NHPS). Under AB-NHPS, the National Health Insurance Scheme was launched as a pilot project.

The scheme, targeted for underprivileged and poor families in urban and rural India, is expected to benefit about 10 crore families in the country.

AB-NHPS ensures a health cover of Rs 5 lakh to each of the listed families for hospitalization in the secondary and tertiary levels. The existing National Health Insurance Scheme launched by the then UPA (United Progressive Alliance) government has been included in AB-NHPS.

To obtain the maximum number of beneficiaries, no criteria has been set for the size of the age of the family or members. The scheme covers members of any age group from nuclear family to large joint family.

Since its introduction in September 2018, there are about 5 million hospitals in 15,968 unrelated hospitals across the country.

However, the scheme was also disputed with reports of fake bills being submitted by private hospitals. In many cases, patients held meetings with hospitals to claim funds provided under the scheme.

Schemes like Ayushman Bharat can work best only when citizens understand their social responsibility and are honest to the government.
