The goal is to provide Piped Natural Gas (PNG) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) for vehicles to the residents of the eastern part of the country. Urja Ganga Gas Pipeline Project 2020
Urja Ganga Gas Pipeline Project Details – GAIL India, a government-owned gas venture, said it has contracted pipeline construction work in an area of 520 km in Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal under the Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga Gas Pipeline Project. The major contracts for Phase-II of Jagdishpur-Haldia and Bokaro-Dharma Natural Gas Pipelines (JHBPL) have been finalized along with them.
In a release, GAIL said that it has awarded the contract for laying 520 km pipeline from Dobhi (Bihar) to Durgapur (West Bengal) including 120 km line in Jamshedpur (Jharkhand). The company’s ambitious 2,655 km JHBDPL project is also known as Urja Ganga Gas Pipeline Project. The pipeline will pass through Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Odisha.
What is Energy Ganga Project?
Urja Ganga Pariyojana Kya Hai – Urja Ganga Gas Pipeline Project was launched by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on 24 October 2016 from Varanasi. Under the Energy Ganga Project, PNG gas distribution will be done for seven cities of Eastern India (Varanasi, Ranchi, Cuttack, Patna, Jamshedpur, Bhubaneswar and Kolkata). The budget allocated for the laying of 1500 km long LPG pipelines in the first phase under the scheme with gas stations in various areas is about Rs 51 thousand crore. Under the project, in the second phase, about 2540 km long gas pipeline connecting Jagdishpur in Uttar Pradesh to Haldia in West Bengal was laid by 2018.

- Under this scheme, 338 km length gas pipeline is covered in the state of UP.
- The state of Bihar will get about 441 km long gas pipeline.
- Jharkhand state will get 500 km long gas pipeline in eastern India.
- There will be 542 km of gas pipeline in the state of West Bengal in eastern India.
- There will be 718 km of gas pipeline in Odisha.
- Under Energy Ganga Gas Pipeline Project, 20 stations will be constructed in Varanasi city to provide PNG connections to 50 thousand houses and CNG to 20 thousand vehicles.
Importance of Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga Project-
Energy Ganga Project has importance as follows:
- With this project, the pace of development of the eastern region of India can be accelerated, by obtaining gas from this pipeline, 25 industrial packages of 5 states of this region will be developed.
- Seven major cities of eastern India Varanasi, Jamshedpur, Patna, Ranchi, Kolkata, Bhubaneswar and Cuttack will be the beneficiaries of this network development.
- About 50,000 homes and 20,000 vehicles of Varanasi will be able to get clean and cheap fuel which will also prove useful in environmental protection.
- The gas supply through this will help revive the fertilizer plants of Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh), Barauni (Bihar), Sindri (Jharkhand), and Durgapur (Pt. Bengal).
- This will help in setting up natural gas based crematoriums in the Ghats and cremation grounds of Varanasi.
- Thus, Urja Ganga Gas Pipeline Pariyojna (Project) will not only prove to be helpful in the economic development of Eastern India but will also play an important role in environmental protection.
Key Features of Urja Ganga Project
- The project will cover about 2500 km of long gas pipeline connecting Jagdishpur in Uttar Pradesh to Haldia in West Bengal by 2018.
- The scheme is being implemented by the Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL). The scheme will cover five states of eastern India (Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Odisha).
- It consists of 40 districts and 2600 villages, which will get direct benefits.
- The scheme is expected to be completed in 2020, after which people can supply gas to their homes.
- Many declining fertilizer industrial units and other sectors such as electricity and motor vehicles can be of great benefit to help renewal.
In the Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga Yojana, not only households but about half a million vehicles can switch to CNG mode, to solve the fuel problem in the country. In order to make this scheme successful and more dynamic, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has also laid the foundation stone for 120 km long Varanasi-Allahabad railway line, which will cost Rs 750.66 crore. This line will enable the cylinders and workers to move faster for planning.
