Unnecessarily pulling a chain in the middle of a train on a train can cost someone. Chain pulling may result in winding up to the jail from paying the fine. In such a situation, you should know the rules of pulling the chain in the train so that you can avoid any penalty.
Under what circumstances can you pull the train chain-
- If a hitchhiker (over 60 years of age) or a child misses and starts the train
- Train fires
- The elderly or disabled person is taking time to board the train and let the train go
- Suddenly someone’s health deteriorates in a bogey (seizure or heart attack).
- In case of train snatching, theft or robbery
This is how it works: Earlier the train bogies were chained everywhere on the walls, but due to misuse, the railways reduced their number. Now they are given only in the middle of every bogey. The alarm chains are attached to the main brake pipe of the train. This pipe carries air pressure, which makes the train move at a high speed. But during chain pulling, this air escapes. The speed of the train slows down due to the decrease in air pressure, after which the loco pilot stops it.
Punishment for Chain Pulling of Train ?: Under section 141 of the Indian Railway Act, 1989, if a passenger or any other person uses the chain without any necessary reason or interfere in the work of the railway staff, then the railway administration, the passengers And due to obstructing the work of the railway staff, the guilty can be sentenced to one year and a fine of up to 1 thousand rupees or both. In any case, this punishment should not be less than this –
- With a fine of five hundred when first caught
- From imprisonment for three months for being caught second or more times

Strict action being taken for pulling the chain
Case 1: On 20 June 2018, Subodh Kumar, traveling in Chennai Rajdhani Express, pulled the train chain without reason. Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station RPF registered a case and produced the accused before the magistrate. A fine of Rs 10,000 has been imposed on the accused in this case.
Case 2: On 20 June 2018, Karthik Varta, who traveled by Goa Express, did a chain pull. They were later fined six thousand rupees by the magistrate.
Case 3: On July 11, Rahul Kumar was traveling through the Golden Temple Mail. When he pulled the chain, the magistrate fined him 8 thousand rupees.
How many Emergency chains are provided in coaches?
In the past, there used to be chains or either side of the coach walls (for ready use by the passengers). But, Indian railways has cut down on their numbers in the recent times (due to their misuse). Today, there is a single chain, mostly situated in the middle portion of every coach.
How does the RPF know about who pulled the chain?
As soon as the alarm chain is pulled, RPF personnel arrive in the coach in no time. It makes many wonder – how? Well, located on the side walls of the coach, the train compartments are equipped with emergency flashers. The flashers (in which the chain was pulled) are activated by the coach as soon as the emergency chain is pulled. A light also begins to blink under the locomotive pilot’s control, until the guard, assistant driver, and RPF personnel reach the location of the chain pulling and are able to manually reset the chain. After the chain is reset, the air pressure gradually returns to normal and the train is ready to depart.
