Civil disobedience means disobeying civil laws, that is, they do not have to obey. Under civil disobedience, agitators are agitated by protesters for their demands. Mahatma Gandhi also peacefully agitated against British rule in civil disobedience. He made several agitations of civil disobedience against many harsh acts and laws of the English government. It was Gandhi’s defiance movement that made the British rule realize the combined power of the Indian people and paved the way for the independence of the country.
Civil disobedience movement of Mahatma Gandhi
Gandhi used the Civil Disobedience Movement to overthrow British rule from India. He believed that the British succeeded in ruling in India because they got the support of Indians. According to Gandhiji, apart from running the administration of the British, there was a need for the cooperation of Indians in many economic and business tasks. Therefore, Gandhiji appealed to Indian citizens to boycott English products in a complete way.
The main reason for the mass civil disobedience movement
The British government’s ruthless policies like the Simon Commission and the Rowlatt Act took a deep blow to Mahatma Gandhi’s dream of complete swaraj. At the same time, the British government was also not in favor of giving Dominion status to India. Gandhi had already warned the British government about the opposition to all these things, that if India did not get complete independence, the British government would face collective civil disobedience. All these political and social causes gave rise to the Civil Disobedience Movement.
The rise of civil disobedience movement under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi
The Civil Disobedience Movement began in 1919 with the Non-Cooperation Movement in protest against the Jallianwala Bang Kand. It gained considerable fame after the Salt Satyagraha. We can also call the Salt Satyagraha or Dandi Yatra started by Mahatma Gandhi. This journey of Salt Satyagraha lasted for 26 days, the journey started from 12 March 1930 and ended on 6 April 1930 in a coastal village of Dandi.
This journey of Salt Satyagraha started with some people but as it progressed, the number of its followers also increased. The main purpose of this visit was to oppose the English tax system and not to make salt locally and to oppose the heavy tax law imposed on it. This movement was a great success and upon seeing it took the form of a large defiance movement and people started making salt in large quantities to challenge the law made by the English government. Although a large number of people were arrested as a result of this movement, yet the British rule was unable to stop this movement.
Due to this movement people started opposing English goods and started giving more importance to the use of indigenous products. With this, people started burning English clothes all over the country and farmers also refused to pay taxes to the English government. All these actions shook the British rule.
Along with this, people started resigning from the important positions of the English administration in order to further voice their opposition on Gandhiji’s orders. As a result, people working on teachers, soldiers and important administrative posts resigned from their posts to support this movement. Along with this, women also participated actively in this civil disobedience movement of 1930, women from every section of the society took part in this satyagraha movement and produced and sold large quantities of salt to support them. This was seen for the first time when women had participated in such a large number of movements. We can say that in addition to shaking the foundation of British rule, this movement also worked to bring every section of the society together.
Effect of Civil Disobedience Movement
The Civil Disobedience Movement shook the foundation of the British rule and gave it a great blow at the economic and administrative level. Under this, many product units were also opened for the production of products in India due to the Swadeshi movement.
The boycott of English products affected products imported from Britain on a much larger scale, reducing imports of English textiles and cigarettes by half. At the same time, the people refused to pay taxes to the government and started the production of salt, so that the British government suffered financially. Due to this movement, the British government also wondered how to deal with this non-violent and disobedient movement because it was a movement in which there was no justification for the use of force.
This movement made the British officials think, they themselves believed that it was easier for them to fight violent movements than non-violent movements. This non-violent civil disobedience movement attracted the attention of the people internationally on the issue of Indian independence struggle and also made people aware of these cruel policies of English rule towards Indians. This movement started on 8 August 1942, became the last nail in the coffin of the British rule. The British finally had to agree to give independence to India after World War II.
The conclusion
Civil disobedience movement has great importance in India’s freedom struggle. It provided a motive for fighting the entire country one by one. It started with the issue of salt, but upon seeing it, it took the form of a national movement against the British rule. The Civil Disobedience Movement was a non-violent movement in which not a single strand of blood was shed, yet it played an important contribution in the Indian freedom struggle.
