Bhubaneswar, Aug 24 (PTI) To provide employment to people during the pandemic period, the Odisha government has launched a new scheme for promoting intensive aquaculture through Biofloc technology in fisheries, a minister said.
Government of Odisha has launched Bioflow Tech Fish Farming Scheme to promote intensive aquaculture in fisheries sector. The scheme will provide livelihood support to entrepreneurs, unemployed youth and aspiring progressive fish farmers. The new scheme will boost fish production in the state and help youth who are facing unemployment amid the outbreak of the COVID-19 epidemic. Candidates can now download the Biofloc Technology based Fisheries Scheme application form online at fardodisha.gov.in. Interested farmers (grow-out tanks, nurseries and seed tanks), fish and shrimp hatchery operators, private entrepreneurs, unemployed youth can apply.

Key Info
i.The unit cost to install a Biofloc unit of 2 tanks is Rs 1.50 lakh, while a Biofloc unit of 6 tanks costs about Rs 4 lakh.
ii.Besides providing all technical know-how to implement the project, it also provides a subsidy of 40% to General & 60% subsidy to SC & ST women beneficiaries for this scheme.
Note– Subsidy support is only for infrastructure costs and does not include any operational costs.
Bio-flow based farming system for intensive shrimp and fisheries is a new technique for promoting intensive fish / shrimp production in a limited area. This will not significantly increase the use of basic natural resources of water and land. People with small land holdings (as small as 150-200 square meters) and who either have municipal pipe water supply or well water supply, can set up this business with small investment.
Eligibility Criteria for Bio-Floc Technology Fish Farming Scheme in Odisha
Only those applicants who fulfill the above eligibility criteria can apply for Odisha Bio-Floc Technology Fisheries Scheme: –
- Aspiring freshwater fish and saltwater shrimp farmers (growing tanks, nurseries and seed tanks); Fish and shrimp hatchery operators; Private entrepreneurs are eligible to receive financial assistance under this State Plan Scheme.
- Preference will be given to unemployed educated youth.
- Since bio-focus farming involves advance technology, the beneficiary has to undergo special training on bio-focus before the unit can operate.
- The support will be in the form of back-ended support for the installation of bio-floc system inside a shed with PVC / tarpaulin tanks, water supply, drainage and aeration units.
- Eligible saltwater shrimp farms / nurseries and seed tanks / hatchery beneficiaries should have a license from the Coastal Aquaculture Authority.
Assistance for the above categories of beneficiaries will be available with a minimum of 2 tanks and a maximum of 6 tanks.
