Every year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15. The holiday celebrates the history, cultures and contributions of American citizens, whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.
The observation began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded in 1988 by President Ronald Reagan. The holiday starting on 15 September and ending on 30 October was covered on 30 August. It was enacted into law on 17 August. 1988, upon approval of Public Law 100–402.
In addition, the day of 15 September is important because it is the anniversary of independence for the Latin American countries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their Independence Day on 16 September and 18 September respectively. Columbus Day or Dai de la Raza, which is October 12, also falls within this 30-day period.

How to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month
Join the Hispanic Division of the Consortium of the Latin American Studies Program (CLASP) and the Library of Congress to commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month, awarded the 2020 Amir Award through a virtual, pre-recorded ceremony.
