Apart from this, people planted trees in memory of their beloved and today the same people are protecting the forest. This urban forest attracts about 1,000 people daily.

Urban Forestry in Maharashtra

The urban forestry concept is not new to Maharashtra. During 1990-91, a massive greenery campaign was carried out in Amravati, Nagpur, Pune, Aurangabad and Nashik. Under this, huge plantations were made in Ambajhari and Gorewara. Nagpur has been awarded urban forests such as Ambajhari (756ha), Seminary Hills (76ha) and Gorwara (1914ha). All these forest areas are the lungs of the city and they have different types of flowers and fauna.

In 2016, the Maharashtra government launched a parallel scheme by opening urban gardens on forest areas under the “Uttamrao Patil Forest Industry” scheme. The basic idea was to create awareness about nature education. Urban forestry is an integrated concept of forest resource management to provide a better environment, pleasing and comfortable environment in an urban system. The launch of the Nagar Van Yojana will provide an opportunity for the states to manage the urban ecosystem.

The Forest Ministry will support the one-time development and recurring expenditure to the concerned agency of the respective cities for the construction of the City Forest. City officials will be encouraged to have a city forest under their jurisdiction to achieve maximum ecological and environmental benefits.
