8 Things You Need To Know About This Scheme

  1. Suppose you have a waiting-list ticket for a train called Lucknow Mail, which leaves New Delhi to Lucknow at 10 am daily. The chart has been prepared, and your ticket shows the wait-listed # 32. Under the Vikas scheme, your ticket can be allocated to the next available train, which is going from Lucknow to Delhi, and leaves after 10 pm.
  2. Therefore, without paying anything extra, your ticket can be upgraded or transferred to another class under the option. Assuming that you have a sleeper class ticket for Lucknow Mail, which is wait-listed. Under Vikalp, your ticket can be upgraded to AC Superfast Express which leaves for Lucknow at 11.30. You do not need to pay anything extra for the upgrade.
  3. Therefore, theoretically, any ticket that is on the waiting list can now be used to travel in trains like Shatabdi or Rajdhani, at no additional cost.
  4. The Vikalp Scheme is only for tickets that have been booked through the IRCTC website. As soon as the chart is prepared, and if your ticket is wait-listed, you will receive an SMS, informing you about the activation of the option, and sharing your new train, coach and berth numbers.
  5. You have the option to either choose, and travel on another train, or cancel the existing ticket. In case of cancellation, the general rules apply to wait-listed trains.
  6. Once you choose the option, you can always upgrade to another higher class in the new train by paying the cost difference. For example, you had an AC3 ticket, but under the option, you got a sleeper class berth in a new train. Now, Okan says yes to the option, you can always upgrade to AC3 in the new train by paying a difference of amount (if berths are available). But the default allocation of tickets to a new train under Vikalp will be free of cost, and will be included in the cost of the original ticket.
  7. Now, when you say yes to Vikalp, and then you decide to cancel, the cancellation will be treated for a certified berth in the new train, not based on the wait-list ticket in the old train.
  8. Only passengers whose tickets are on the waiting list even after preparation of the chart will be eligible for the option. And, once you said yes to the option, you cannot board the original train, for which your ticket was issued on the waiting list.
