What is an IRS Officer?

The full name of IRS is Indian Revenue Service (IRS) which is called Indian Revenue Service in Hindi. Let us tell here that an IRS officer is the one who works in this government department. Education Requirements

Physical Requirements

Age

  • The minimum age of the candidate should be 21 years and maximum age should be 30 years.
  • There is an age relaxation of 3 years for OBC category candidates.
  • There is also a relaxation of 5 years in the age limit for the candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

Exams to become an IRS Officer

To become an IRS officer, you have to appear in the UPSC Civil Services Examination, for this first you have to buy the application form from any post office. Now fill this form properly and send it to the following address

Phase I (Preliminary Exam 400 marks)

Candidates who successfully apply online or offline are then invited to appear for the Civil Services Preliminary Examinations in which questions based on topics such as General Knowledge, Knowledge and Logical Reasoning are asked from the candidate. The candidate has to attempt 200 questions based on General Knowledge within 120 minutes. Similarly, for society and logical reasoning, candidates have to solve 200 questions for which 120 minutes are given. Also know that in this exam, multiple choice questions are asked to the candidate. Let us inform you here that this exam is conducted in the months of May or June.

Phase II (Mains Exam 2025 Marks)

The candidates who are successful in the preliminary examination are called for the main examination. The total marks for the written test has been kept 1750 and the personality test is 275 marks. In this way, taking all the marks, this exam is of 2025 marks. Let us inform you here that this exam is held in the month of October in which the candidate has to solve questions on the following topics –

  • Paper A – It is a qualifying paper of Indian language in which the candidate has to write an essay for which 300 marks have been kept.
  • Paper B – Question paper of 300 marks is to be solved to test the English language aptitude of the candidate.
  • Paper l- In this paper a general essay is asked to be written by the candidate for which 250 marks have been kept.
  • Paper ll- Under General Studies subject, the candidate has to answer questions based on subjects like Indian Heritage and Culture, History, Geography and Society, this test is of 250 marks.
  • Paper lll- In this paper also questions based on General Studies are asked from the candidate like Constitution, Politics, Social Justice, International Relations etc. This paper is also of 250 marks.
  • Paper lV- In this paper also questions based on general knowledge are asked like Technology, Economic Development, Biodiversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management etc and for this also 250 marks have been kept.
  • Paper V- In this paper questions are asked on topics like Ethics, Integrity and Aptitude for which 250 marks have been kept.
  • Paper Vl- Optional Subject Paper-l 250 Marks
  • Paper Vll – Optional Subject Paper-ll 250 Marks.

Phase III (Interview)

This is the third and last stage of becoming an IRS officer in which the candidate is called for an interview. In the interview, the personality of the candidate and his mental ability as well as decision making ability are checked. If the candidate also clears this assessment test, then he/she is selected for the post of IRS officer after which he is given 3 months training so that he can do his job properly in the post.

Now this question must be coming in your mind that what would be the pay scale for such a wonderful job, then for this let us tell you that after being appointed to the post of IRS officer, they get the basic pay scale ranging from Rs 15,600 to Rs 39,100 in which 6,600 Grade pay of Rs. Apart from this, other allowances like Dearness Allowance (DA), House Rent Allowance (HRA), Travel Allowance (TA) are also available.
