Himachal Pradesh Government’s Chief Minister’s Plastic Free Scheme 2024:Himachal Pradesh Government has launched a new Chief Minister Plastic Free Scheme 2019 (Single Use Plastic Buy Back Scheme 2024). Under this scheme, the state government will purchase single-use, non-recyclable plastic waste with a minimum support price of Rs 75 / – per kg.

The scheme was launched by Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur at a function organized on 2 October 2019 to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Chief Minister Plastic Free Scheme 2019-20 has been announced to rid the state of polythene. According to preliminary estimates, a total of about 75,000 kg of plastic is expected to be collected. The budget required to buy plastic is about Rs 2.81 crore.

Non-recycled waste such as polythene bags will be purchased by rag-pickers, households and urban local bodies. As you may be aware that since October 2009, the use of polythene bags has been completely banned but still people use it and shopkeepers also give the same to people in plastic bags.

For this reason, Himachal Pradesh Plastic Free Scheme was introduced in a cabinet and on 16 September 2019, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Plastic Free Scheme (Single Use Plastic Buy Back Scheme 2019) got cabinet approval.

Highlights related to the Chief Minister’s Plastic Free Scheme 2024: –

  • The state government also decided to buy plastic waste at the rate of Rs 75 per kg to make people aware and be more involved in this campaign by explaining health related to cleanliness.
  • Now people can collect money in their homes by collecting plastic in their vicinity and selling it to the government at the rate of Rs 75 per kg.
  • The government will use this plastic waste as fuel for road construction and industries.
  • According to preliminary estimates, a total of about 75,000 kg of plastic is expected to be collected. A budget of about Rs 2.81 crore has been allocated for disposal of this plastic waste.

This scheme will encourage people to use environmentally friendly bags instead of polythene. The Himachal Pradesh government has already banned the use of plastic bags and cutlery made of thermocol. Jute bags are an alternative to plastic bags.

In today’s time, there is a need to adopt Gandhi’s humanistic message and ideology in life. This year, the state government has celebrated the 150th birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation as a “Swachhata Hi Seva” campaign. On 2 October 2019, the state government also celebrates this day as a “shramdaan” to erase plastic waste.

Himachal Pradesh is the first state to deal with the threat of plastics and other non-biodegradable waste. Polythene waste collected through various awareness campaigns will be used as fuel in road construction and in cement kilns.
