My joy knew no bounds when I received a letter from the Indian Council for Child Welfare (I.C.C. W.) that I had been selected for the prestigious ‘Bharat Award’ for bravery. I waited anxiously for the 25 the of January to come, for on this great day I would be given the award.
Finally the day arrived. I, along with my parents, reached Delhi on the 25th morning. We were taken from the station to the guest house where the Council had arranged for our stay. This was the first time I had visited Delhi. The Government had arranged for a sight-seeing tour for all the children who had won the bravery awards. We were, in all, twenty-three children and had come from different parts of India. I made new friends. We saw the Red Fort, Raj Ghat, Shantivana, etc. we were then taken to the International Dolls Museum.
We returned to the guest house and had our lunch. After lunch we went to meet the Prime Minister. He was very proud of us and appreciated our acts of bravery we were photographed with him. How happy I was to know that the next day I would be the talk of the country with my photograph on the front page of every newspaper.
The great moment finally arrived. I was seated in the Great Hall and was feeling nervous as well as excited. My name was announced and I walked to the stage. They told the audience that I had been awarded the ‘Bharat Award’ with a cash prize of Rs. 5.000 for showing exceptional courage. I had fought with a wolf who had attacked my six-year old friend while we were out grazing cattle. Armed only with a stick, I repeatedly hit the full-sized wolf, not caring for my own life. I chased away the wolf and carried my wounded friend to the nearest hospital some miles away. I had succeeded in saving my friends’s life. When I received the award from the Prime Minister, the whole hall echoed with the sound of the claps of the audience. Apart from the award, I received some other gifts as well.
After the function, we had dinner with the Prime Minster. I was the centre of attraction of the whol function. I was so happy that I found it difficult to hold ack my tears of joy. I could hardly talk.
At night when I lay in bed, I was sure that never in my life would I be able to forget this momentous day.
