ESSAY ON SPORTS DAY OF MY SCHOOL

Games are compulsory in every school as physical development along with mental development is essential. All students are not necessarily good in studies. Some are good in sports. Much to the joy of such students the Sports Day is one of the major events in the school.

Every Year my school celebrates the Sports Day in the month of November. There is a big playground where the event takes place. The preparations are made much in advance. A day earlier the tent is put up. Chairs are arranged in rows along the boundary wall of the ground so that the invited parents and non-participating students can sit and watch the happenings. The most important person present in the school on this day is the chief guest who is invited to preside over the function.

As on every Sports Day, this year too, there was a large gathering. The Chief Guest unfurled the flag. He gave a short encouraging speech and declared the sports’ meet open. The function began with the march past of all the participating students in their smart white dresses. I was one of them. Then the races began. Our sports teacher blew the whistle for the race to begin and another teacher noted the time with the help of a stop-watch. A photographer took the photos.

There were 100 metres, 200 metres and half a mile races. I took part in 200 metres race and wcn a second place. The most interesting race of 50 meters was specially held for the tiny-tots of the school. Everyone enjoyed the scene and cheered the little ones. Some, who lost their balance, fell and began to cry. Our teacher took them away and gave them sweets. Hurdle race and relay race were also held. Funny events like potato race, lemon race, three-legged race and sack race were a lot of fun.

After this there were the high jump and long jump events. My friend beat all others in high jump. Then came the turn of discus throw. Another exciting event was the tug-of-war between the students and the teachers. Everyone eagerly watched this new event as students continued to pull hard to win. There were loud cheers when teachers were defeated.

The parents were not left out. The Principal of my school announced the event ‘passing the chair’ for them. There were many funny scenes as they tried to grab a seat every time the whistling stopped. There were loud claps from ‘everyone. We enjoyed immensely.

At the end the Chief Guest distributed the prizes to the winners. My friend was declared the best athlete of the year. He won six prizes. The Chief Guest praised all the athletes and congratulated the winners. Then the Principal gave a small speech to thank the Chief Guest.

Refreshments were distributed to all the students and the guests. Lastly, the National Anthem was sung and the function ca-me to close. Sports Day was thus full of in and excitement. I went home with the single silver cup n my hands. It was a wonderful day.
