The English language was introduced in India in the 19th century to import the Western system of education, the then Governor General of India in the 19th century, as a medium of education and examination. The incorporation of the English language into India was aimed at the British rulers to create ‘babus’ for administration and to ensure mental slavery to implement Western culture although the introduction of the English language proved to be a boon. Raja Rammohan Roy, a religious and social reformer, was a strong supporter of this language. Other leaders like Dadabhai Naoroji, Motilal Nehru, Jawaharlal Nehru were also educated in English.
