Without opposition, democracy cannot function and hence it is a definite and necessary part of the Constitution. Indian democracy has been very fortunate to witness some of the proceedings of a large opposition party immediately after the period of independence. Like Feroze Gandhi, through his penetrating arguments, the reputation of Parliament was enhanced and the level of parliamentary debate raised. This is indeed the misfortune of Indian democracy because in those early years the opposition powers and ruling parties have deteriorated gradually.
As much as today’s Indian politics can be defined, mergers, alliances, defeats, fickle loyalties and absolute uncertainties are being fully formed. People no longer hold politicians in great esteem. And today the situation is so bad that anyone should be called to insult the politician. Many political parties, each with a different ideology, are at the center stage of national politics. This has become much more evident nowadays.
Apart from the miserable state of political parties, the major threat to Indian democracy is the ever increasing regional, linguistic, caste and communal tendency. Political parties, which lack ideology, try to win elections and gain power to exploit these divisive tendencies.
The land of people of ignorance, illiteracy and poverty is not suitable for the development of democracy. It must be remembered that illiterate politicians are neither politically intelligent nor have the vision for the development of a state or nation. Furthermore, they are not mentally prepared to find solutions to the problems of the nation. He cannot act with the foresight necessary for the future of the nation.
Violence is increasing day by day in most Indian states and law and order is declining. They, too, pose a threat to democracy. Law enforcers have now lost their will and effectiveness due to corruption and greed in almost all lives. The violence has spread to educational institutions and universities. If drastic and immediate steps are not taken, the future of Indian democracy will be in danger.
Democracy cannot function effectively without economic stability. This stability can only be achieved by the proper utilization of community resources. Increasingly growing population, unemployment and increasing poverty are also threatening economic growth.
