ICDS Scheme of Ministry of Women and Child Development
Group of 0-6 years is about 15.8 crore in the total population of India. These children of the country are the future of India. In response to the challenge of reducing malnutrition, morbidity, low learning ability and mortality among all these children, a scheme called ICDS has been launched by the government for its children and nursing mothers.
The Ministry of Women and Child Development implements various schemes for the welfare, development and protection of children. The Integrated Child Development Services / Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) scheme was launched on 2 October 1975. The Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) scheme is one of the flagship programs of the Government of India.
Children, pregnant women and lactating mothers in the age group of 0-6 years have been included as beneficiaries under the ICDS scheme. The scheme is mostly implemented through Anganwadi.
Objective of Integrated Child Development Services Scheme (ICDS): –
- Improve nutritional and health status of children in the age group of 0-6 years.
- To lay the foundation for proper psychological, physical and social development of the child.
- Reduce the incidence of mortality, morbidity, malnutrition and school dropout.
- Achieve effective coordination of policy and implementation among various departments to promote child development.
- Establishment of Anganwadi centers to promote child development.
- Enhancing the capacity of the mother to take care of the general health and nutritional needs of the child through proper nutrition and health education.
- Give 500 calories of energy and 12-15 grams of protein and 300 calories of energy and 18-20 grams of protein to mothers in 300 days of the year.

Immunization, health screening and counseling services are health related and are provided by the NRHM Department of Health and Family Welfare through the health system.
