2. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL)
Founded by Walchand Harichand in December 1940 as Hindustan Aircraft with the then Mysore Government, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited’s ambitious objective was to manufacture aircraft on our soil. After becoming a shareholder in 1941, the Government of India made a complete acquisition in the following year, 1942. HAL caused a wave in the media after announcing its ambitious 10-12 tonne attack helicopter project with 2027 as the target rollout year. It was cited as a response to India’s iconic American Apache.
3. Ordnance Factory Board (OFB)
The Ordnance Factory Board, established nearly two centuries ago, is one of the largest defense organizations managed by the Government of India. Established by the British as a gun carriage agency in Kosipore, it is today a defense equipment manufacturer with 41 factories. The company was originally set up to manufacture arms and ammunition for the British. Today, the company serves the Indian Defense Forces with nine training institutes making military training, parachutes and other important defense equipment.
4. Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL)
After its launch in 1954, BEL established itself as a government PSU that is critical to our defense equipment. BEL is an important defense equipment manufacturer with eight manufacturing units spread across India in locations such as Ghaziabad, Hyderabad, Pune and Chennai. With an estimated turnover of Rs 11,700 crore as of 2018-19, Bharat Electronics Limited employs 10,000 employees. 5. Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL)
Established in 1970 in the city of Hyderabad, Telangana, Bharat Dynamics Limited is an important defense unit that manufactures ammunition and missile systems that are important to our defense forces. After pulling engineers from Indian ordnance factories, DRDO and aerospace industries, BDL made its presence felt by producing an anti-tank guided missile, the SS11B1. BDL manufactures its critical defense equipment at its three manufacturing units in Hyderabad, Bhanu and Visakhapatnam. It recently handed over an anti-submarine torpedo to Varunastra.
6. Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL)
Tata Advanced Systems, a wholly owned defense equipment manufacturing company of the Vishal Tata Group, was established in 2007 in Hyderabad, Telangana. It employs 3000 people and the company was in discussions to successfully bid for a project involving the manufacture of air-to-air refueling equipment for its British customer Cobham. The missile system is the company’s focus area and the company is engaged in developing subsystems for India’s three major missile programs.
7. Mahindra Defense System (MDS)
The Mahindra Defense System entered manufacturing equipment for the armed forces, beginning with the licensed manufacture of the World War II icon, Willys Jeeps. The company was established in the year 1947. Willy’s license made him a major player in the Indian defense sector with importers, assemblers and jeep adapters. The company made a significant contribution to the armed forces when it built a line of armored vehicles for our defense forces in the year 2012. 8. Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T)

KRAS has a state-of-the-art manufacturing unit in Hyderabad, Telangana covering 8500 sqft. Kalyani Rafael Advanced Systems made its presence known after receiving orders of $ 100 million for the manufacture of 1000 Barak-8 MRSAM missile kits for both the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force. This, incidentally, was the company’s first order. The company hopes to be a major contributor to the ‘Made in India’ initiative of the Government of India.
