INDIA AND HER NEIGHBOURS
India is the seventh largest country in the world in terms of size with a land frontier of about 15,200 kms and a coastline of mainland and groups of islands of about 7517 kms. India is the largest democracy in the world and has the privilege of six neighbouring countries touching her land borders.
The Himalayas and series of mountain ranges separate India from China in the north and from Myanmar in the east. Along the chain of the Himalayas between India and China lies Nepal. Bangladesh is wedged in-between the north-eastern states and West Bengal. Pakistan lies all along the north. west border leaving a small portion for Afghanistan.
The closest neighbour of India is Pakistan. She came into existence when India was partitioned at the time of independence in 1947. Relations between the two countries have never been friendly. In September 1965 and in December 1971 Pakistan launched attacks on India. Recently the relations have been improved and it is hoped that economic, cultural and political relations will be pursued for mutual benefits.
The Himalayan Princedom, Nepal, and India have striking similarities. The good friendly relations are not much based on economic, social and political grounds but more upon common religious, cultural, racial and historical links which bind them together. Nepal receives huge financial and technical assistance from India for the industrial development.
India has good relations also with Afghanistan and Myanmar. Agreement to decide the international border has been signed between India and Myanmar. The beneficial relation is expected to continue.
Bangladesh owes its very existence to India. It was India who fought for the neighbour’s independence. The history reveals the bloodshed and sacrifices made by India.’India has been her strong supporter in the hour of need and crisis.
China is another large country. Relations with China have not been friendly over the past years. India took the initiative to stretch a friendly hand and now to some extent mutual cooperation is being sought through cultural, economic, scientific and technological fields. The bold step taken by India has risen hopes that the solution to the border problem will be found through peaceful means.
The tapering Indian peninsula is surrounded by Arabian Sea in the west, Bay of Bengal in the east and Indian Ocean in the south. About 70 miles from Cape Comorin in the Indian Ocean lies the friendly island neighbour Sri Lanka. Iran and USSR are not far from Indian borders. India’s relations are good with all. Bhutan is the closest ally and is closely connected to India by special treaty.
Panch Sheel is the basis of India’s foreign policy. The non-aligned movement was evolved on this policy. India believes in a peaceful mutual understanding with all her neighbours.
