The caste system is a classification of people on the basis of their birth, community and work. Casteism originated in India in ancient times and has undergone many important changes since then. Today it has become a controversial issue and the basis of reservation in jobs and educational institutions.
Origin of caste system
The caste system in India started with social and economic factors. Indian castes are mainly classified into four groups – Brahmin priests; Kshatriya warrior; Vaishyas, merchants and zamindars and finally Shudras, general public, servants and people who were associated with jobs. Brahmins are scholars and occupy the highest position in Indian society, followed by Kshatriyas, Vaishyas and Shudras.
This classification is found in one of the ancient legal texts of Hindus called ‘Manusmriti’; Around 1000 BC The classification was based on the action (karma) of an individual or community. Manusmriti has elaborate laws of marriage for all castes as well as their conduct, food and property. The scripture prohibits a high-caste person from eating food prepared by the Shudra, as it will affect their next life.
Expansion of caste system
Over time, several other castes developed in the Indian caste system, which further split to include sub-castes. The main castes mentioned in the Manusmriti were further divided into 3000 castes and 25,000 subcastes. The classification of castes and sub-castes was based on occupation.
Caste system and society
Caste plays an important role in Indian society till date. Indian rural communities diligently follow the caste system and in a way it sets the order for their conduct.
The division between upper castes and lower castes is always seen in society, more so in rural areas. First, the residential areas of the upper and lower castes are well separated and both live in separate colonies.
The lower caste people do the necessary work in exchange for the money, grain, etc. required by the upper caste persons, though they both require each other to survive, yet, the distance between them is maintained. Even today, in rural areas of India, it would be inappropriate for a Shudra to enter the house of a higher caste person without the latter’s consent.
Lower caste individuals are also not allowed to use the same resources as upper caste. They are also not allowed to bathe or bathe from the same well. In some rare cases, lower castes are also not allowed to enter temples.
Declining caste system
The caste system is at its peak despite having deep roots in the Indian community due to many socio-economic developments. The people of the Shudras and other lower castes have changed their profession for a long time and today they are doing all kinds of work which was done only by the upper castes. Today, low caste people are getting involved in business and jobs and are far from having menstruation. They are getting educated and realizing new horizons of development.
The government has taken several initiatives to uplift the social and economic status of lower caste communities. There is also a system of reservation for admission in government sector and higher education institutions. It was introduced with the aim of bringing the lower caste into the mainstream and elevating their social and economic status.
The conclusion
Despite the efforts of the government and society, caste discrimination still persists in India. The signs are more clearly visible in rural parts than urban. We need to understand that a society divided on the basis of caste will only benefit the ulterior motives of some opportunistic individuals.
