Tamil Nadu to conduct Marine Fishermen Census 2020 data survey in March, TN socio economic status of fisherfolk to be assessed in Tamilnadu
The Tamil Nadu government is going to start a census of TN marine fishermen in March 2020. The state government Tamil Nadu conducts a census on the fishermen community every 10 years, which means it is a decisive exercise. TN Government It will conduct the first study of its kind on the socio-economic status of marine fishermen in the state. Tamil Nadu Marine Fishermen Census 2020 data will be collected for a period of 6 months.
With the Tamil Nadu Marine Fishermen Census 2020, a study will be conducted to identify marine fishing villages. This study will have complete information about the population dependent on marine fishery resources and their occupational structure.
The Census of Fishermen will help the Government of Tamil Nadu to formulate schemes to benefit marine fishermen.

As per the TN Marine Fishermen Census 2010, the total population of the fishermen community was 7.87 lakhs. According to traditional estimates, the total population of fishermen has increased to about 10.25 lakh. The Department of Fisheries has started the administrative process for starting the Tamil Nadu Marine Fishermen Census 2020 and collecting data. The six-month long statistical drive will include the following details: –
- Age
- Literacy
- Occupation
- Fishing Craft such as mechanised fishing boat / non-motorised / motorized vehicles
- Fishing Gears

Reasons for Tamil Nadu marine fishermen census 2020 data
Tamil Nadu ranks 4th in total marine fish production in the entire Indian nation. In the last financial year i.e. FY 2019, about 6.75 lakh tonnes of fish were caught, which generated foreign exchange revenue of 5,500 crores. The state of Tamil Nadu also provides financial assistance of Rs. 5,000 to each family during the fishing ban period. The TN government has launched its plan to identify advisors to conduct studies on the socioeconomic status of fishermen. The main objective of collecting Tamil Nadu Marine Fishermen Census 2020 data is to identify the latest status, impact of various government schemes and key areas of intervention to improve their standard of living. The study will focus on the following issues: –
- Welfare schemes were implemented in the last 15 years.
- Measurement of improvement achieved through Tamil Nadu government schemes.
- Infrastructure developed along the Tamil Nadu coast in the last 10 years.
- Catch job
- Fish marketing
- Benefits received by fishermen through the infrastructure developed by TN State Government. Will be studied.
The Tamil Nadu Marine Fishermen Census 2020 data will help identify areas that require more attention to improve livelihoods. With the collection of demographic data, the TN Fisherman Census will look at the ownership and occupation of fishing property and equipment, the nature of fishing, fishing, disposal of income and indebtedness.
