A marriage certificate is a legal proof provided by the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, Special Marriage Act, 1954 (under Sections 13 and 16), Indian Christian Marriage Act and Parsi Marriage and Divorce Act, 1936 that two people are married. According to the Supreme Court it is very important for a couple to have a marriage certificate for the welfare of women. Now couples can register their marriage through online mode. This is because the government wants to provide an easy and hassle-free way of registration for both couples and officials.

Eligibility criteria for West Bengal Marriage Registration

Following are the basic eligibility criteria for marriage registration:

  • The bride and groom must be over 21 years of age. If the bride’s age is below 21 years, but is over 18, a parent or guardian consent form is required.
  • At the time of marriage, no party should have more than one spouse.
  • At the time of registration, the wedding must take place and the parties must remain together

  • To apply for marriage registration, applicants will have to visit the official website of the Law Department, Register General of Marriages, Government of West Bengal.
  • From the home page of the website, you have to click on the “Register your wedding” option.
  • A new web page will appear on the screen, the application form will appear on the computer screen
  • The application form is divided into five parts, details of the groom, bride details, social marriage details, marriage officers details and registration details.
  • First of all enter all the details of groom such as name, father’s name, date of birth, registration, email, phone number, religion, nationality, Aadhaar number etc.
  • Upload scanned image and groom’s signature
  • Now enter the bride’s name, father’s name, date of birth, registration, email, phone number, religion, nationality, Aadhaar number etc.
  • Upload a scanned image and signature of the bride
  • Now enter information about social wedding such as place of social marriage, date of social marriage and wedding invitation card
  • Enter the details of the marriage registration officer, first choose the marriage officer from the choice of the groom’s address or the groom’s address
  • Now select marriage officer type, district, sub-district, work area, block, police station and gram panchayat
  • In the final stage of the application form, you have to enter the registration details
  • First select the registration place “Office of the Marriage Officer” or “Outside the Office of the Marriage Officer (within his / her jurisdiction)”
  • Now enter the name and number of the campus and the name of the road / locality, district, sub-district, work area, block, police station, gram panchayat, village and post office.
  • Select “Within Marriage Officer’s Office Hours” or “Beyond Marriage Officer’s Office Hours” Registration Time
  • Finally, submit the application form and the registration process is over. Until you get your certificate, take a print out as proof of application.
