Stem: The lotus stem is fleshy and thick and is called rhizome, which grows in mud at the bottom of water sources. This closes the bunch of roots to keep the plant attached to the soil. The leaves develop from the nodes of the rhizome. Rhizome can be used to spread Lotus.

Leaves: Lotus leaves are simple and nearly round with long, hollow, air-filled stalks (petioles) that support the leaf to float on the surface of water. The stalk may be up to 100 cm long. Covered with long and short spikes called pricks. The diameter of the leaf can vary between 60 and 80 cm. The upper surface is bright green and shiny in appearance, while the lower surface is reddish in color.

The flowers have several petals arranged on a spongy top shaped disc called the thalamus. The disc has a carpel which eventually develops into fruits. Fruits remain embedded within the thalamus. When the fruit matures in the spongy part of the thalamus and all the petals and stamens fall off and the conical thalamus separates from the stalk.
